The World Above, and the World below…Looking Down…Seeing Through God’s Eyes

As I am sitting on this rainy, cloudy Saturday morning in a local guest house, just trying to orient my brain and my body one more time through twelve time zones that I zoomed through in the last 24+ hours, I pondered what He may think of all that is going on here, day in and day out, and this question came to mind.

Have you ever wondered how God views His world below, the very one you and I inhabit side by side, making a footprint, each of us living out our own story?

As I flew across the vast horizon, looking down at the enormous expanse of water and land below, that very question came to mind. How does our most gracious, loving, just Father view His children below in the world that He alone created and so lovingly documented in Genesis.

From thousands of feet above, the boundaries we draw, the countries we claim, the differences we emphasize, and the divisions we create must look so very small. Yet every life below matters to Him. Every person, every village, every family, every child. Not one is beyond His sight.

In Genesis, God looked upon all He had made and declared it good. He created humanity in His image, giving us life, purpose, and a responsibility to care for His creation and one another. Yet look at the world we have made of the world He gave us. We see conflict, division, injustice, fear, and suffering. We see people reaching for power while others struggle simply to survive. How far we have wandered away from the goodness of His original design.

And still, He loves us.

He sees beyond our accomplishments, our possessions, our status, and the labels we place upon each other. He sees hearts. He sees the hurting, the forgotten, the generous, the faithful, and those still searching for Him. Through Jesus, He has shown us that His love knows no borders nor boundaries, and no distinction of human value and worth.

Perhaps we don’t spend enough time asking God to help us see it all through His eyes.

What if we began to see one another not as strangers nor competitors, nor people who are different from us, but as fellow human beings created and loved by the same gracious Father?

We may have different footprints that we are leaving on this earth, but we share the same Creator.

And, above all of this, while our time here is only temporary, the love of God is everlasting.

As I looked down from that airplane window, amongst the perfect formation of clouds and sky around me, I was reminded of just how small I am in the vastness of His creating…and yet how deeply loved I am.

Perhaps that is something worth thinking about: If God looks upon this world with such love, what does He see when He looks through our eyes?
